From July 18 to the 21, 2009 the U14, U15 and U17 squads representing SIGMA FC travelled to the prestigious Score Showcase tournament hosted in Greensboro, North Carolina. With each of the U14 and U15 squads participating in their own age group and the U17 playing up for most squad members two years this tournament would be a great measuring stick for the progress of the teams over the year.
In the U14 group, SIGMA team dominated the tournament with 6 victories culminating with a 4-1 victory in the final match. The team above all played up to the standards of the coaching staff and kept quality soccer at the forefront of winning. With the teams ability to keep constant possession with good ball circulation and player rotation they were able to dominate the predominately bigger and more physical approach of many of their opponents. Congratulations to the SIGMA C2 (U14) squad for a job well done. "The tournament was a great way for our boys to grow closer together as a team and also provide them an opportunity to compete for a championship" commented SIGMA FC Technical Director Bobby Smyrniotis. "This provided me with an opportunity to see if they can stick to our style of play at all times. The end result was that they were able to be disciplined in our approach to the game throughout the tournament and for that I am very pleased with our players".
In the U15 age group the SIGMA C1 team started off with a quality victory 3-1, only to lose the second match with a close 2-1 scoreline to the eventual tournament champion. The team was forced into the consolation round where they lost in a shootout. "The tournament was a success apart from one match where the boys lost their composure. In all the other matches they did what was asked of them and more but sometimes you can do everything and luck must be on your side too. This time luck was not with us, but I am happy with the boys performance" commented SIGMA U15 coach Juan Baretto.
The U17 group of SIGMA comprised of mainly 1993 born players was definitely provided a challenge as they competed in the top flight of the tournament in order to gain greater exposure in front of the many University scouts present. With a record of 1 win 1 tie and 3 loses the team had a successful run from impressing the scouts in attendance for their ability to control play in most matches via possession soccer. Unfortunately the size and physical difference when playing teams 1-2 years their older was the teams demise as 5 of 6 goals allowed in the 5 matches came from set pieces. "I am proud of the boys as we put them into a difficult situation in facing players 1-2 years their senior. On our end it was a success in preparing many of them for their goal of attaining a US Scholarship. The feedback from coaches was great and I am positive this will make the players more hungry in future showcase events where they will begin playing teams their own age!" commented coach Dave Zonneveld.
The Score Showcase was held at Bryan Park in Greensboro North Carolina. Bryan park is one of the premier facilities in the US with 18 Bermuda grass fields each of which in immaculate condition. SIGMA would like to thank the organizers of the Score Showcase for a wonderful tournament and look forward to having success at the future Score events!
