SIGMA FC is proud to announce that academy graduate Richmond Laryea has signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer (MLS) ahead of the upcoming 2016 MLS SuperDraft to be held in Baltimore on January 14th. Every year MLS targets a few of the NCAA's top underclassmen to be signed to the league ahead of the annual Draft providing players an opportunity to forgo their final years as student athletes at University to turn professional. The move by MLS to make Laryea one of its top signing targets in is clear indication that he is one of the most sought after young players in North America. Laryea becomes the second SIGMA FC academy player in consecutive years to be signed by MLS via the Generation Adidas program. He follows his long time youth teammate Cyle Larin who was selected 1st overall by Orlando City SC in the 2015 MLS Superdraft and who was awarded the league's Rookie of the Year honors after scoring a record 17 goals in his first season in MLS.
A technically gifted and dynamic midfielder with the ability to drive his team forward, Laryea recently concluded his second successful year at the University of Akron. 2015 was a fantastic season for Laryea as he led the Zips to the NCAA College Cup (Final 4) and was acknowledged as one of the top young players in North America. He accounted for 18 goals and 17 assists in 34 games between NCAA (Akron) and League1 Ontario (SIGMA FC) play.
A native of Toronto Ontario, Laryea is one of the original academy players of SIGMA FC dating back 2006 where he started as a 11 year old. He was a part of the SIGMA FC 2013 graduating class that featured many of Canada's top players entering the NCAA. Laryea split his time the last two years between the University of Akron and SIGMA FC, where he featured in the academy's 1st team competing in League1 Ontario.
