Name: Emery Welshman
Club: Real Monarchs (Real Salt Lake)
Emery Welshman, the former first-round MLS Super Draft selection has signed with Real Monarchs following a successful preseason with their parent club Real Salt Lake. For Welshman, 23, the signing represents a successful transition back into the professional ranks.
After being drafted 16th overall by Toronto FC in the 2013 SuperDraft, Welshman made two appearance for the TFC first team, eventually being released before the start of the 2014 MLS season. Welshman returned to the SIGMA FC fold, taking on a leadership role during the club's inaugural League1 Ontario campaign.
Welshman led SIGMA FC with 16 goals and 12 assists. He finished second in the league goal scoring table and his performance throughout the season resulted in him being named to the League1 Ontario Top XI team. Following the season Welshman earned a call up to the Guyana National Team.
According to SIGMA FC technical director Bobby Smyrniotis, Welshman will be an important attacking player for the Monarchs, and will also have a very strong opportunity to make the jump to the MLS powerhouse Real Salt Lake within the year.
"I am very happy for Emery as he makes this next step in his professional career," said Smyrniotis. "2014 was a transition year for him and he did a great job rejoining us at SIGMA as a leader both on and off the field. His time with our first team was valuable and got him going again. Knowing the North American professional landscape, it is only a matter of time before he is scoring goals in MLS."
Prior to being drafted in 2013, Welshman was among the most prolific scorers in the NCAA, earning a first team All-Pac 12 selection for Oregon State University. He's been a member of SIGMA FC since 2008.
Welshman joins Cyle Larin (Orlando City), Giuliano Frano (Seattle Sounders II), Johnny Grant (Montreal Impact II) and Greg Ranjitsingh (Louisville City) as SIGMA FC and League1 Ontario graduates in the professional ranks.
